SCI Excavation

SCI Engineering
In 2009, the City of Riverside wished to install a playground in the top area of the Renner-Brenner Site Park.  The playground would require special drainage and foundations for the equipment.  It was realized an archaeological excavation should be conducted and SCI Engineering was the chosen bidder.

As of January 1, 2019, SCI has yet to deliver a completed report and because of that contract, I can only provide what is known public information until the city receives it.   Some information was gathered under the fauna and carbon date tabs above.

About March of 2009, Gary Brenner was asked by the city where the best place would be for a playground and he met with a representative at the park.  He told them no place on the top level was good and that it needed to be down below by the skate area.  The representative pushed Gary into showing the best place if it was built on the upper part and he did point out the area where the excavation was conducted.  He based his decision on an area where the topsoil was all but gone due to plowing.

In July 2009, SCI began their work and it continued to early August.  The top 8" were removed by a Bobcat machine and this upset Brenner who organized a group of professional archaeologists to appear at a council meeting to speak of their disgust on the way the project had began.  The purpose of this site is not to go into great details other than the project continued.

Brenner eventually developed a friendship with the SCI leader, Don Booth.

SCI encountered more artifacts and features than they had planned on and eventually their plans changed to only excavating the areas that would be impacted by footings, etc.
